SSC CGL 2026 Maths: 25 Questions, Only 15 Minutes — What to Study and What to Skip

Do this one calculation, and the entire Quantitative Aptitude section will look different to you.

SSC CGL 2026 Tier-1 follows sectional timing. Quantitative Aptitude has 25 questions and you get 15 minutes for that section. Nothing carries over — when the 15 minutes end, the section closes whether you are done or not.

15 minutes = 900 seconds. Divide that by 25 questions.

⏱️ 36 seconds per question. That is the real exam — not “one hour for Maths”, and not “solve the easy ones first, come back later”. There is no coming back.

Almost every Maths syllabus article online was written for the old pattern, where you could spend 20 minutes on Quant, move to English, and return to Maths at the end. That paper no longer exists.

This post gives you two things: the complete topic-wise syllabus, and an honest classification of those topics by how much of your 900 seconds they actually eat.


First, the marking maths nobody explains

Tier-1 Quant carries 50 marks — +2 for a correct answer, −0.50 for a wrong one.

Same accuracy on the questions you actually knew. Five marks gone, purely from attempting what you could not finish. In a fight for 12,256 vacancies, five marks is thousands of ranks.

This is why “what to skip” is not lazy advice. Under a 15-minute clock, skipping is a scoring skill.


The complete SSC CGL Quantitative Aptitude syllabus

This is the official Tier-1 scope. Nothing here is optional in terms of study — the triage comes later, on exam day.

Arithmetic (the largest block)

  • Computation of whole numbers, decimals, fractions and relationships between numbers
  • Percentage
  • Ratio and Proportion

  • Interest — Simple and Compound

Algebra

  • Basic algebraic identities of school algebra and elementary surds

  • Triangle and its various kinds of centres
  • Congruence and similarity of triangles
  • Circle and its chords, tangents, angles subtended by chords, common tangents to two or more circles

Mensuration

  • Triangle, Quadrilaterals, Regular Polygons, Circle
  • Right Prism, Right Circular Cone, Right Circular Cylinder
  • Sphere, Hemispheres, Rectangular Parallelepiped
  • Regular Right Pyramid with triangular or square base

Trigonometry

  • Trigonometric ratios, Degree and Radian measures
  • Standard identities, Complementary angles
  • Heights and Distances

Data Interpretation

  • Histogram, Frequency polygon, Bar diagram, Pie chart

⚠️ A note on weightage: SSC does not publish an official topic-wise weightage. Any number you see online — including ours — is an estimate drawn from previous-year papers. Treat it as a trend, not a guarantee. Papers vary from shift to shift.

Based on past-paper trends, Arithmetic usually forms the biggest share of the 25 questions, followed by Advanced Maths (Algebra, Geometry, Mensuration and Trigonometry taken together), with Data Interpretation typically contributing a small, predictable set.


Now the part that matters: the 36-second sort

Here is the honest classification. Not by difficulty — by time cost.

🟢 Green zone — solve these first (roughly 20–40 seconds each)

These are your score. Formula-light, calculation-light, and they reward practice directly.

  • Simplification and computation
  • Number System
  • Percentage
  • Average
  • Ratio and Proportion
  • Simple Interest
  • Profit and Loss (direct type)
  • Trigonometric ratios and standard identities (direct value questions)
  • Data Interpretation — the straightforward “read the chart” questions

In a 15-minute section, your first pass should be a hunt for green-zone questions — nothing else.

🟡 Yellow zone — attempt on the second pass (roughly 40–70 seconds each)

Worth attempting, but only once the green ones are banked.

  • Compound Interest
  • Discount and successive discount
  • Mixture and Alligation
  • Partnership
  • Algebra — standard identity-based questions
  • Geometry — direct property-based questions (angles, basic circle properties)
  • Mensuration — single-solid, direct formula questions
  • Data Interpretation — the calculation-heavy questions in a set

🔴 Red zone — the time-eaters (often 90 seconds and beyond)

These are not necessarily “hard”. Some are quite easy. They are simply expensive — and opening one at minute two is how students lose the section.

  • Time and Work with multiple workers or changing efficiency
  • Pipes and Cisterns with a leak
  • Boats and Streams (multi-step)
  • Trains (two bodies, opposite or same direction)
  • Multi-step Geometry — centres of triangles, combined circle-and-triangle setups
  • Mensuration involving combined or melted-and-recast solids
  • Heights and Distances with two observation points
  • Long algebraic manipulation where you must simplify before you can even begin

📌 “Red zone” does not mean do not study it. Study every one of these. Some will appear in a form you can solve in 30 seconds, and you should take those marks. It means only this: do not open a red-zone question on your first pass. Mark it, move on, and return only if time remains.


Your 15-minute plan, minute by minute

Minutes What you do Target
0–7 Green sweep. Read, recognise, solve, next. Not resolving in ~40 seconds? Leave it. 10–13 questions banked
7–12 Yellow pass. Pick up the medium-cost questions. 4–6 more
12–15 Return to marked questions. Solve what looks reachable; leave the rest blank. Protect what you have

Notice what this plan does not include: reading the paper in order from question 1 to 25. Order is a habit from school exams. It carries no reward here.


Three mistakes that cost the most marks

  • Starting at question 1 and pushing straight through. If questions 2 and 3 happen to be red-zone, you have spent four minutes on two questions and the section is already lost. Skip forward without guilt.
  • Refusing to abandon a question you have already started. Ninety seconds in, half-solved, and the instinct says “I have come this far”. Those next 60 seconds could have bought you two green-zone questions instead.
  • Guessing to fill the sheet in the last minute. With −0.50, blind guessing loses marks on average. Eliminate two options and the maths improves; guess with nothing, and you are paying to be there.

The one-line summary

The 2026 Quant section is not testing whether you know Time and Work. It is testing whether you know which 15 questions to attempt out of 25. Study the whole syllabus. Then practise choosing.


This can only be learnt by actually doing it

Reading a strategy and executing it under a live 15-minute clock are completely different skills. Most candidates discover their real per-question speed during the actual exam — the worst possible time to find out.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1. How many questions should I attempt in the 15-minute Quant section?
There is no fixed number, but 15–18 accurate attempts is a realistic and strong target. Chasing all 25 in 15 minutes usually costs marks through negative marking rather than adding them.

Q2. Should I skip Geometry and Mensuration completely?
No. Study them fully — direct, single-formula questions from these topics are very much worth attempting. What you skip on the first pass are the multi-step versions, not the topics themselves.

Q3. Is guessing worth it in Quant?
Only when you can eliminate two options. With −0.50 for a wrong answer, blind guessing loses marks on average. A blank costs you nothing.

Q4. Does time saved in Quant carry over to English?
No. Each section gets exactly 15 minutes and unused time does not carry forward. If you finish early, use the remaining seconds to re-check answers in that same section.

Q5. Is Arithmetic more important than Advanced Maths?
Based on previous-year trends Arithmetic usually carries the larger share, but SSC publishes no official weightage and papers vary by shift. Prepare both; prioritise Arithmetic for speed.
