Most guides hand you a mystery table of rules that quietly breaks on exactly these cases. This one doesn’t. We’ll solve everything with one honest, visual tool: the Venn diagram method. Draw the picture, read the answer. No memorising 50 fragile rules.

Quick answer: The safest way to solve any SSC CGL syllogism is the Venn diagram method — draw every possible diagram that fits the statements, then test each conclusion against those diagrams. A conclusion is definitely true only if it holds in every diagram; it’s a possibility if it holds in at least one. Shortcut rule-tables (All+All=All, etc.) are faster on simple direct chains but fail on possibility and either-or cases — so keep Venn as your default and use tables only as a speed check.

On this page:

What is syllogism (and what the exam actually tests)

The 4 statement types + their Venn diagrams

The Venn diagram method — step by step

The 4 golden rules

The “only a few” trap

Possibility conclusions — how to test

Either-or & neither-nor cases

Coded / symbol syllogism

The speed shortcut (with an honest warning)

Most-repeated question patterns

Common mistakes that cost marks

Practice mini-set (self-test)

FAQs

What is syllogism (and what the exam actually tests)?

A syllogism gives you a few statements (assumed 100% true, even if they sound absurd — “All chairs are birds” must be treated as true) and asks which conclusions logically follow. The trick is that your job is not to decide if a conclusion is true in real life — only whether it must be true given the statements.

SSC (and every bank/railway exam) tests four skills here: reading a statement as a picture, drawing all valid pictures, spotting when two conclusions form an “either-or” pair, and handling “possibility” wording.
