SSC CGL 2026 Tier 2 — Detailed Syllabus
Module 1 — Mathematical Abilities
| Topic | Sub-Topics |
|---|---|
| Number System | Whole numbers, Integers, Fractions, LCM & HCF |
| Arithmetic | Percentage, Ratio, Profit & Loss, Simple & Compound Interest, Time & Work, Speed & Distance |
| Algebra | Basic Algebraic Identities, Linear Equations, Quadratic Equations |
| Geometry | Triangle, Circle, Quadrilateral — properties and theorems |
| Mensuration | Area and Volume of 2D and 3D figures |
| Trigonometry | Trigonometric Ratios, Heights & Distances, Identities |
| Statistics | Mean, Median, Mode, Bar Graph, Pie Chart, Histogram |
Key difference from Tier 1: Tier 2 Maths is significantly harder. Geometry and Algebra questions are more application-based. Trigonometry — which barely appears in Tier 1 — is a major topic in Tier 2.
Module 1 — Reasoning & General Intelligence
| Topic | What to Expect |
|---|---|
| Verbal Reasoning | Analogy, Classification, Series, Coding-Decoding |
| Non-Verbal Reasoning | Paper Cutting, Mirror Image, Embedded Figures |
| Logical Reasoning | Syllogism, Statement-Conclusion, Blood Relations |
| Data Sufficiency | New addition — requires logical thinking with limited data |
Key difference from Tier 1: Reasoning in Tier 2 includes Data Sufficiency questions which do not appear in Tier 1. These need separate preparation.
Module 2 — English Language & Comprehension
| Topic | Questions (approx) |
|---|---|
| Reading Comprehension | 10–12 |
| Cloze Test | 5–6 |
| Para Jumbles | 4–5 |
| Fill in the Blanks | 4–5 |
| Error Spotting | 4–5 |
| Synonyms / Antonyms | 4–5 |
| Idioms & Phrases | 3–4 |
| One Word Substitution | 3–4 |
Key difference from Tier 1: English in Tier 2 has 45 questions compared to 25 in Tier 1. Reading Comprehension passages are longer and more complex. Vocabulary level is higher.
Module 2 — General Awareness
Same topics as Tier 1 GA — History, Geography, Polity, Science, Economy, Current Affairs — but questions are more application-based. Factual recall alone is not enough in Tier 2 GA.
Module 3 — Computer Knowledge Test
| Topic | What to Study |
|---|---|
| Computer Basics | Hardware, Software, Input/Output devices |
| MS Office | MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint — basic functions |
| Internet & Networking | WWW, Email, Browsers, IP Address, LAN/WAN |
| Operating System | Windows basics, File management |
| Cyber Security | Malware, Firewall, Password Security basics |
Good news: Computer Knowledge Module is the easiest part of Tier 2. With 2 weeks of focused preparation, you can score 18-20 out of 20 consistently.
SSC CGL Tier 2 — Marking Scheme
| Paper | Correct Answer | Wrong Answer | Unattempted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 — Module 1 & 2 | +3 marks | −1 mark | 0 |
| Paper 1 — Module 3 (Computer) | +3 marks | −1 mark | 0 |
| Paper 2 (Statistics / Finance) | +2 marks | −0.5 marks | 0 |
⚠️ Critical point: Negative marking in Tier 2 Paper 1 is −1 mark per wrong answer — double that of Tier 1 (which is −0.5). This means guessing is far more dangerous in Tier 2. Accuracy matters more than attempt count here.
Tier 1 vs Tier 2 — Key Differences
| Factor | Tier 1 | Tier 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Qualifying only | Final Merit |
| Total Questions | 100 | 150 (Paper 1) |
| Total Marks | 200 | 450 (Paper 1) |
| Duration | 60 minutes | 2h 15min (Paper 1) |
| Negative Marking | −0.5 per wrong | −1 per wrong |
| Difficulty | Easy–Medium | Medium–Hard |
| Maths Level | Class 10 | Class 10–12 |
| English Questions | 25 | 45 |
| Computer Module | Not present | 20 Questions |
SSC CGL 2026 Tier 2 — Previous Year Cut Off (Paper 1)
| Post Category | UR | OBC | SC | ST |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Group B Posts (AAO, ASO, Inspector) | 330–360 | 310–340 | 295–320 | 280–310 |
| Group C Posts (Auditor, Tax Assistant) | 300–330 | 280–310 | 265–295 | 250–280 |
Note: Cut offs are approximate based on 2023–2024 trends. Out of 450 marks (Paper 1).
How to Prepare for Tier 2 — Subject-wise Strategy
Maths (Module 1): Start with the same topics as Tier 1 — Profit & Loss, Time & Work, Geometry. Then add Trigonometry, Advanced Algebra, and Statistics. Tier 2 Maths needs daily 1.5–2 hours minimum.
English (Module 2): Reading Comprehension is the game changer. Read 1 English editorial daily — The Hindu or Indian Express. This builds both speed and comprehension. Vocabulary practice must be daily — 10 new words every day.
General Awareness (Module 2): Same preparation as Tier 1, but go deeper. Don’t just memorise facts — understand the context. SSC Tier 2 GA tests whether you understand WHY, not just WHAT.
Computer Knowledge (Module 3): Start this 3 weeks before the exam. It doesn’t need months — just focused 2-week preparation. PYQ questions from Computer module repeat significantly.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1. Is SSC CGL Tier 1 score counted in the final merit?
No — from SSC CGL 2022 onwards, Tier 1 is only a qualifying exam. The final merit list is prepared entirely on the basis of Tier 2 performance. This is one of the most important changes students need to know.
Q2. Do all candidates have to give Paper 2 in Tier 2?
No. Paper 2 (Statistics or Finance & Economics) is only for candidates who apply for Junior Statistical Officer (JSO) or Assistant Audit Officer (AAO) / Assistant Accounts Officer posts. All other candidates only give Paper 1.
Q3. What is the negative marking in SSC CGL Tier 2?
In Paper 1 (all modules), every wrong answer deducts 1 mark. This is double the Tier 1 negative marking of 0.5 marks. Accuracy is far more important in Tier 2 — never guess unless you can eliminate at least 2 options.
Q4. How difficult is the Computer Knowledge module?
The Computer Knowledge module is the easiest part of Tier 2. Questions cover basic computer concepts, MS Office, and internet basics — all Class 8–10 level. 2 weeks of focused preparation is enough to score 18-20 out of 20.
Q5. When should I start preparing for Tier 2?
Start from Day 1. Even while preparing for Tier 1, cover topics that overlap — Maths, Reasoning, English, and GA. Tier 2 builds directly on Tier 1 preparation. The additional Tier 2-specific topics (Trigonometry, Data Sufficiency, Computer Knowledge) can be added after Tier 1 is solid.
SSC CGL 2026 Tier 2 is where the real competition happens. Your post, your department, your salary — all decided here. Start building the foundation now with real PYQ practice.
